The Leadership Judgement Indicator (LJI) is a unique scenario-based online instrument. It measures the level of wisdom that respondents use in decision-making when they are in positions of influence and need to get the right things done with and through other people. It is used extensively in recruitment, assessment and development.
The LJI was published in 2005 by Hogrefe, one of the largest publishers of psychometric instruments in Europe. Over 10000 people have completed the LJI and it has been launched in France and Bulgaria. It is currently being translated for use in Germany, the Czech Republic, Italy, the Netherlands, Brazil and Russia. It is also distributed in the USA, where its use has been growing and it is due to be available on the Pan web-based testing platform in the first quarter of 2011.
Effective leadership judgement goes beyond behavioural style or intellectual ability. It relates to a leader’s wisdom in getting the right things done with and through other people. It involves:
- the capacity to understand how best to adapt personal style to the nature of the task and the characteristics of the people involved; and
- the preparedness to adopt the most appropriate style for the situation, especially when that style is not the most natural or preferred way of behaving.
It is a critical factor for success in private and public sector enterprises and other settings – wherever leadership is required.
How does it work?
The LJI is a psychometric assessment tool composed from 16 different scenarios. It requires the respondent to rate the appropriateness of various courses of action. The advantage of this measurement approach is that the respondent is being asked to demonstrate their level of leadership wisdom. There are a range of different reports generated from the LJI – example reports – and it is designed to form the basis of a personal leadership development plan.
