The Coach on the Desktop (CotD) is a unique online tool. It is designed to assist both coach and coachee in working together to develop the coachee’s leadership skills. It helps coaches develop others’ leadership skills quickly and with more lasting effects than coaching alone.
How does it work?
The CotD is designed to be integrated into coaching programmes in ways which accelerate the coachee’s development. It is accessible 24 hours a day and can be used by the coachee to interface between leadership theory and getting things done in the real world. It uses a process of asking non-directive questions then makes recommendations based upon the individual’s responses. How does it help me as a coach?
During the coaching sessions, development occurs from the relationship you create using your skills as a coach. The CotD acts as a vehicle in your absence, building upon that relationship. It helps the coachee assimilate the underlying principles of the Formula 4 Leadership model and to see parallels between leadership theory and what is happening directly in his or her own workplace. You can then develop and embed this learning further at subsequent coaching sessions.
How does it fit in with coaching sessions?
The CotD is used by the coachee between coaching sessions and its unique history section records the responses and the outcomes reached. At the next coaching session, the coach reviews this objective evidence of the coachee’s leadership decision-making activity, the culture in which the coachee is working and the approach he or she takes when analysing situations. This provides a springboard for considering the patterns of response and underlying tendencies, then applying the learning from this analysis to identify more appropriate future leadership behaviour.
Can it help to develop a coaching relationship with people working at a distance?
Being online, the CotD is particularly effective in supporting telephone and email coaching. It can be utilised anywhere with web access. Your coachee does not have to be in the same office as you and indeed can be in another city or another country. As an example of this, Maureen Miller of the University of Otago talks about her experiences of using the CotD at her workplace in New Zealand. Despite the time differences between New Zealand and the UK Maureen was able to access the CotD at her convenience, in her time zone and her feelings about the coaching she received over Skype can be easily seen.
